MvdV> Fortunately it hardly affected me. My house has been paid off decades
MvdV> ago, it does not hurt me that the hypothetical value has dropped 10%.

Once again I notice that GMTA.

Anita and I paid off the last debt to the bank -- based on the value of our house -- 30 odd years ago.

The first years together, with a child and a new house, we struggled with economics every day. But we were both from poverty stricken families, so we decided that we would never buy anything without saving for it first. So we refused to ask the bank when we expanded our house significantly (from 36 sqm to the present 360 sqm).

The original mortgage on our house was devastating. With an interest rate of 16% (I still remember it) it took us more than ten years to pay it off. But from thereon, we've never ever had any financial problems, even with my company having irregular income -- sometimes a lot, sometimes nothing.

Alas, I pity all those young families that have bought houses that often, when built, cost less than a tenth of what they cost now. Unlike e.g. cars, old houses don't lose value when they become old and worn out.

In Sweden it's all about taxing the profit you make on an investment. The tax for a worker here is 50% and above. The tax for someone making a profit on a capital investment is only 20%. Go figure how that assists in moving the society forward... :(
