Only the established church, which is Christian, has the monarch as its titular head. All other churches are not part of the Establishment. Thus they are known as "free" or "nonconformist" churches.
The Queen's title is Supreme Governor of the Church of England. When Henry VIII broke away from Rome he made himself the supreme head in place of the Pope, thus binding the church to the state. The title was later changed in the reign of Elizabeth I to "supreme governor" as "supreme head" could be thought to be usurping Christ's position as the head of the universal Christian church. First mentioned in the thirty-nine articles of faith in 1562.
