DR> Inertia. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Ahhh... Seems reasonable enough. But not really to a Swede like me.

As you might know Sweden turned to driving on the right side of the road in 1967. Our previous left drive wasn't really broke, and we didn't have much traffic from abroad on our peninsula, but we changed never the less.

It cost quite a few millions but we made it. Maybe the UK could make it too -- if for nothing else, it would make it much more easy for your few car manufactures left?

DR> But tell me this - why do metric countries still measure television
DR> screens in inches? If I look for a new television in France I have to
DR> look for how many pouces it measures.

Agreed. We have that in Sweden too. Alas, old habits die hard.

BF>> And when you did, some half a century ago, why are you still talking
BF>> about miles, Fahrenheit and so on?

DR> Because we (well, I) don't understand kilometres. When I drive in France
DR> I have to convert kilometres to miles to see how far I have to go. Mind
DR> you, I've just bought a new car that can display miles or kilometres. I
DR> use that to make sure I stay within the speed limit.

How many more generations do you think it will take before the old UK citizens will be accustomed to the metric system?

DR> Actually, we don't use Fahrenheit any more. Even I can cope with
DR> Celsius. It was fifteen degrees Celsius outside today! :-)

LOL! Isn't 15C plus much more pleasant than 15F plus?  :-)

DR> At least we gave up pounds, shillings and pence in 1972. But that was so
DR> that manufacturers could put prices up.

Yeah, I remember those days. I worked in London several times in the late 1960s and the early 1970s and you guys were really, really confused by then.

DR> No, we're certainly not in love with the USA. We just didn't trust
DR> Napoleon. Still don't.

Some of your politicians seem to have a crush on the US, at least. The illegal US war on Iraq springs to mind.

DR> It is to us. It's that place over the pond. It looks small because it's
DR> so far away.

   Ahhh... I see.
