Yes, I said I knew what the difference is. My annoyance is with the figurative use of the word when the word is simply used to mean "lots". Whereas at one time we would see "tons and tons" now we see "tonnes and tonnes". Same context. No suggestion that it means anything exact, so the difference between metric and imperial doesn't really come into it.

I don't really know when this became common but, now I'm rather hard of hearing, I have subtitles on the television programmes and I've never seen the word "ton" whereas I see "tonne" many times a day (figuratively speaking!). ;-)
