I saw my first partial eclipse when I was a little boy back in the '40s and I've seen several since. But in 1999 I was near enough to a total eclipse (about 60 miles) that it was worth making a small effort, especially as it wasn't total anywhere in England. I can't remember the exact spot where we watched it - it was right out in the country - but it was near the Seine and  the Abbey of St. Wandrille which we visited to fill in time, which is where I heard them wishing each other "bon eclipse".
