Well, I don't know what you saw but when I definitely saw a total eclipse (yes, I saw the corona and took a photo of it to prove it, and I had a telescope from which I projected the image on to a sheet of white paper) it wasn't totally dark. It couldn't be because the light from the corona gives an eerie twilight. In fact, I was quite surprised, and a little disappointed, at how much light there was. Nevertheless when the edge of the sun reappeared it was quite dramatic.
Take the experience of someone who has also seen it with his own eyes! ;-)
