RB> Even if I were willing to pay such astronomical amounts, I sincerely
RB> doubt it.

Astronomical? EUR2000? Do you smoke? Do you drink? Do you have a car? How much does that cost you?

RB> Only people who place enormous value on fast-fast-fast
RB> communications (and those are not really that common in Germany) might
RB> be interested in such things.

Or people with children with grandchildren that visits you from now and then, and who likes to watch e.g. children's TV on demand without the annoying pausing caused by a cheap and slow internet connection.

   Welcome to the future...

RB> You may think so, but the connections exist in Germany, and have done so
RB> for the past 50 years or so. As for the EU, I'd just like to see them
RB> attempt to dictate German-internal conditions (to a partly-owned
RB> government company) that would involve billions of Euros investment. No
RB> way would that go without a fight that would threaten the very fiber of
RB> the EU.

Sweden got away with it, and it didn't even cost us billions, just less than a milliard of Euros spent over two decades.

RB> Really? I didn't notice many luxury mansions in your neighberhood when I
RB> visited.

So you still think that a healthy internet connection is only for the rich people? Here in Sweden we regard it as a democratic necessity to be able to communicate with the rest of the world without relying on old time media. Do you know what made the Arab Spring possible?

RB> Ah, Michiel... you have a great imagination, but real life looks
RB> differently. How many of _your_ neighbors are willing to pay EUR 2,000
RB> plus monthly fees for the kind of connections Bjorne refers to? Are the
RB> Dutch so much richer than the Germans?

So it seems. Or they are not so cheap that they prefer to hang on to 20th century technology. May I ask if you own a smart phone? If so, what did/does it cost you?
