on amiga all this was supported with PARNET and SERNET, so devices could do anything with that link, even use internet via one of them with the other end as a router :=)
google amitcp, it was for me a real cool thing to see ARCNET netcards share both envoy tcp stack and miamidx have internet at the same cable on arcnet, so basicly i did 2 tcp stacks on one cable, beat me :)
smallest amiga was a a500 unexpanded, just with a hooked arcnet card could use internet via a2000 with have both arcnet and ethernet cards, that was the old days for me :=)
in linux its was not implemented well, it needs PLIB in kernel space, and SLIP to make it via serial
plib is the parallel version
