You cannot really maintain the OS part anymore as XP is unsupported by MS for more than two years now. For the hardware part... well, what kind of maintenance (maybe apart from de-dusting) do you do? I do have a Duron-1000 machine at work from about 2000 that is in 24/7 service since then. Still with the original harddrive, but I would not make any bet on it still being alive tomorrow. And calculating the compute power you get from the electricity invested would yield horrible results.
