Your suggested way does not work, either: You have to take care of false positives and false negatives, and correlation alone does not proof anything. So just because all blind people drink water from time to time, does not imply that this is the reason for their blindness. You can use statistics to hint you into a direction to do further investigations. But unless you come up with a compelling explanation of the actual mechanism causing something, statistics alone won't be the thing I'd believe in.
