Coming from German as mother tongue, it is pretty natural for me that nouns have three genders to choose from. Adapting to English (nouns have neuter gender in most cases) is comparatively easy (I think). French is much harder, because the nouns might have a /different/ gender than in German. For example, "der Mond" (moon) is masculine in German (due to references to the Norse god Mani) while the French "la luna" is feminine (inherited from the Latin word luna, feminine because Romans saw a goddess behind it).
