Even with 10G, CAT6A is just fine on short distance (the usual thing within a house).

Cheaper still? 10G fibre equippment dropped significantly during the last 2 years or so. I'd say it is already quite affordable for home use. Just two examples: MikroTik CRS326 is a fully-fledged router/switch that comes with 24x1G ports and 2x10G fibre uplink ports, the device starts selling around 150,- (including tax). Qnap sells a 10G desktop switch with 4xSFP+ ports and 4xSFP+/RJ45 combo ports, starting around 450,- (including tax). Cheap 10G transceivers start at less than 20,- these days... shortrange is usually up to 300m which should be sufficient for the casual home.
