Possibly the variety is important. We have so-called "wax cherries" here: they are ripe when yellow with a trace of red. Bing cherries (the dark red type) may be different in their need for sun and moisture.

As the weather in Germany is greatly dependent on the exact location - and often amazingly local in nature - I'm not too surprised. Here in Datteln, I've often enough experienced torrential rain and hail, where Waltrop, some 5-6 km away, was dry as a bone. This year, Marl, some 10 km away, really got hit with torrential rain and even flooding, whereas here in Datteln, we only got a few drops. Never a dull moment, but even so, I could use more sun and less cloud.
