Interesting, that our views on this matter coincide so closely. My German passport is valid until 2020, and after that I won't renew it either, for the same reason as you give. In my view, only criminals are fingerprinted - and that used to be the case. Nowadays, fingerprints are required for German passports - and again if you happen to visit a number of countries - the USA being the leading example, but there are others as well.
I also don't want to travel anywhere I can't get to with a car anymore, for the same reasons you cite. I still remember how pleasant it was to travel before 9/11 - but those days are long past. Now air travel is nothing but hassle and high prices.
I go even further and vigorously dislike the "mug shot" photos now required for national IDs and passports: no hats, no smiles, just an unfriendly stare at the camera (at least you're not forced to remove yopur glasses). But unfortunately, these are impossible to avoid.
