"Standard English" is what TV commentators speak, and is limited in the choice of words and expressions. That ensures comprehension even by people with a limited grasp of English.
DR> I suppose we have a "posh" word and "common" word for most things. DR> The posh word invariably comes from Norman French.
Possibly. But my comments were directed toward comprehension. If one wants to be understood, one does _not_ use uncommon words. Otherwise, a speaker (or writer) takes his/her chances, and should not be surprised when errors in understanding occur. They are _not_, in such a case, the "fault" of the listener/reader, but that of an uncaring or misinformed speaker/writer.
