Which is also geographical. Or do you think it includes Russia, the middle east and the like? For that matter, the term "old Europe" is generally used in the sense of "central Europe" - which is also geographical.

Is it? I see the reverse. Starting with blind enthusiasm, proceeding via wishful thinking and at present ending with disillusionment and in some cases outright rejection. That appies to the populations more than to the rulers of the individual countries. The rulers see only their own benefits - supplying friends who have lost elections with well-paying jobs requiring little work and financing their political hobbies with money from the EU bucket (supplied by the taxpayers, who have little or no voice in the matter).
