I can only agree 100%.

The beginning of this week, I made a horrible mistake: I touched a running system. My fido system.

I only wanted to replace a CPU fan, and in the end somehow managed to cause a super-GAU: both the motherboard and the hard disk defective. How? I don't know. Both were old, admittedly, but both operated just fine until I started playing around.

Meanwhile, I've hooked up another similar, functioning motherboard and a HDD that I prepared for a possible problem two years ago (with a system of April 2014), and have, after a great deal of trouble, updated the system to the extent that I can write this and send it off. But there are unfortunately still other problems. One of them is that for reasons unknown, packed echomail archives from trusted uplinks (in the protected inbound) are not unpacked. I have to do that manually.

So I agree with you that you should NEVER, NEVER touch a running system without a dire need. And even then, should only touch it if really, absolutely necessary - and only after doing a full backup beforehand, with a spare motheroard and HDD ready in case of problems.

Cheers, Bob
