MV> Opportunism perhaps.

The opinion here in Germany appears to be that she wants a clear personal majority. Remember, she was not elected, but appointed PM.

Parliament has already given her a mandate for negotiation, and legally, there is nothing else to be done. However, if she gets a large majority in the upcoming election - which she expects - she can negotiate more freely than otherwise, with less fear of resistance at home.

MV> So she either wants a strong mandate, or someone else to do the job.

That seems reasonable, although I doubt she envisions losing the election at this point. From what I read, Labour is in a bad state, and the Conservatives are nearly sure to win a large majority.

Cheers, Bob
