No, David, there's a difference, and it's not merely figurative. A ton is 2000 pounds, but a tonne is 1000 kg (which is roughly 2200 pounds). The spelling indicates what system of measurement is used.
It took me quite a while to figure this out, too, and I was a translator for nearly 20 years.
