Surprises me. I first visited Paris in 1967 with a German lab assistant from the chemistry lab in Heldelberg.

I can still remember us driving into the city next to a large square, and me running over to two girls walking near the road, to ask "est-ce-que Paris?". I can't remember what they said, and probably only understood a little (my French is still not really good), but it was positive :-)

After that, we got a cheap hotel and started sightseeing. In the evening, we went to a nightclub area (can't remember exactly where), and my buddy picked up a French girl who only spoke French and some English, so I had to translate into German for him. We visited the Louvre, Napoleon's Tomb and the Eiffel Tower, among other things. It was a great weekend (that was all the time we had), and I certainly didn't notice any unfriendliness in the population during that time, although my buddy and I were speaking German.

Mybe you just had bad luck.

My most recent trip to France was several years ago, to southern France near Juan-les-pins. Beautiful area, but unfortunately very overrun by tourists. Best visited in the early spring or late fall, although many accommodations are closed by that time.

Cheers, Bob
