It is, and I've never heard it used in Germany - just "Lehrerin". Must be some bureaucratic thing.

This "Ms." was invented many years ago in the States to avoid "discrimination" of females. People base it on the fact than males are always Mr., whether they're married or not. I think it's silly, but it's common nowadays in the States. And some women are very upset if you attempt wo use the Miss/Mrs. titles - they think you're trying to "discriminate" against them.
In the States, people have become very sensitive about such things in the last 40 years.
