This discussion reminded me of something a Henkel colleague once told me when I was based at the Henkel plant in Montreal, Canada. He was a German, born in Frankfurt/Main, but spoke accent-free American English.
He related that he once boarded the "Maid of the Mist" (not sure of the name, but I think this is correct) on the Canadian side of Niagra Falls, and rode over to the US side. An American customs/immigration office went through the boat asking where the passengers were born, and my colleague answered "Frankfurt" (with an American accent). I might add that there is really a city by the name of Frankfort, Kentucky (pronounced the same as "Frankfurt" in Germany except for the German "r"):
He wasn't questioned further and had a great day in the States before returning to Canada. That was in the 1970s, when the world was still "young and gay" (and I don't mean "homosexual").
