Nor do they unfortunately understand much about building and running public operations such as railroads, airports and the postal system. We've had bad examples of all three in Germany, and it's hard to decide who does the poorer, more expensive job: the politicians or the company managers. Up to now, the politicians win that competition (in the sense that they provide scandalously expensive services that are sluggish to change and often take many years to implement. And, of course, as in the case of the German Bundesbahn, the government sucks such high dividends out of the operation that there's little or no money left to improve poor service. And _that_ is supposed to be better than a private operation?
