May be I do not follow the "normal" procedure here as Host 25 but all nodes connected to each net have to poll their host for mail & files if only to collect nodelist or nodediff as required plys the region mail areas along with any other file and mail areas echo node is interested in.
As I am host for UK :250 and Ireland :263 I can see at a glance if any on is not collected over say 10 days. After 14, I attempt on a daily basis to poll them and drop any held files/mail. If I cannot contact them then on day 21 (and sometimes earlier) I mark them as down and after 28 remove them from the nodelist by commented out the entry in makenl along with a note of the date and after 45/60 I remove them fully and from my system (I have already marked their node entry as paused).
I find this simple and very easy to see who is still running a active system even if it is only for getting fidonet mail !
Been doing exactly the same when I was host of my previous addresses 257, 444 others that escape me, but there again I have been around since the 80's (and 70's using another type of system whatever that was) running a BBS type system for myself or my business/company.
