I was defending Linux not knocking Windows, however that said I do seem to have to reboot Windows more often than not for many updates with in some cases more than once during a full update cycle. Hence the comment in my defense.
Hardware issues affects all platforms forcing a shutdown forced or otherwise. The only time hardware upgrades do not force a shutdown is for new DASD (or other sata devices) being mounted/installed where I can avoid a reboot by doing a hot install and in some cases a hot swap.
Above comment exclude using a dns service that decides to shutdown which is now twice over a three year period despite using a static IP address.
