JK>>> The BBBS software that I run here won't even dial points on my own JK>>> system :)
HD>> My UniCorn BBS (FrontDoor) once did in the middle of the night. HD>> The next day I had to change that immediately,
JK> I bet! I ran FD for years early on from when I first joined Fidonet JK> until maybe about 8 years later :) JK> One of the first things I set up for FrontDoor was the cost table to JK> prevent high cost calls JK> (I think that is what that table was called <g>).
I did not understand that table quite well, so I hoped I did it right? I very seldomly call POTS crash, so updating the NodeList is not necessary, until the next crash call to a node, not being my normal uplink.
JK> In the state where I lived (New York State) Long Distance calls were JK> astronomical at the time... JK> Dialing across State lines was cheaper than dialing a town an hour away. JK> (how times have changed now <g>).
In the beginning when there were only 300 baud modems, the local calls in the city were only 15 cents, whatever how long the duration was. So some industrial companies did not hire a local line, but they simply kept a dial line continuesly busy with their modem. Of course that did not last long.
For inland calls we had for a long time 4 prices; Local from 08:00 - 18:00 hour cheapest. Local from 18:00 - 08:00 hour moderate. distance from 08:00 - 18:00 hour Most expensive. distance from 18:00 - 08:00 hour expensive. So you had to avoid to call outside you local range, at least at working hours. I still have the logfiles on paper with all my phone calls when I lived at home with my parents, because we had to pay them back for our calls. That's why many BBS's were only running at nights at a voice line. For calling abroad there were many prices for every group of countries. You could say the further away, the higer te price per minute was. Other continents were very expensive to call.
What the exact prices are now i do not know. I call so less, because of my bad hearing, that it is affordable ;-).
Henri.
