For file distribution you may be right, but for mail distribution there were much barriers, like CSO's or hub systems who did not want to carry echomail area's not belonging to FidoNet, HCCnet etc., i.e. for other not Dos/Windows systems. Besides that, there is a Dutch Big Ben Club founded in 1983 supporting Acorn and RISC OS computers including Raspberry Pi who also want to exchange FTN-mail. It is still producing a little amount of mail and files, namely the *Asterisk a HTML based club magazine and some clubsoftware. That's why there was/is AcoNet, AmigaNet and maybe AppleNet, AtariNet etc. Ie sometimes called the four A's in the eighty's ;-).
