The use of the underscore is probably quite uncommon. The remainder is all dependent on the software used. Some use [0-9][a-z] others only [0-9]. Many wiil use the last combination e.g "9" when the pool is exausted.
What I noticed with Binkd, is that when a duplicate file name is received, either the filename or the suffix is bumped. In the case of mail bundles, the character before the dot is incremented to be the next value in the alphabet.
But is you do not know what the otherside can handle, or whar compression method is available, then it is better to use packets. with the last generation of Binkd, uncompressed files are compressed during transport, it it is worth the trouble.
This last option always kicks in when I forward the Daily nodelist, which is uncompressed, to Wilfred.
