 You would probably be right it it was a streight bar of glas. But it clearly
 is not, as it is bent all over its leght. So it travels by reflecting on the
 boundaries, where there is a change. The breaking index is dependent of that
 change. There will be a loss of light were the bouncing to an fro will not
 be optimal. With multimode fiber, the reflexion is optimize for more
 freqiency ranges, I think it is done by creating a coaxial structure of
 different types of glass.

 I bet Michiel is in a far better position to explain all this.
