Yes, but then the future would have been less hazy.

Making snapshots on the peoples wishes, when the consequences are not clear and a rosy future is painted on assumptions, is not a good democratic tool.
How about having a referendum on abolishing taxes. I bet you will get a over 50% in favour. Think of all the nice things you could do the money you pay as taxes. Should such a will of the people be excuted?
In the case of Brexit, among other issues, emphasis was put on the net result of the money that the UK pays to the EU and what came back. But what fails in that equation is the addition to the economy, that the membership brings.
