Apart from the reasons already given by Kees, allowing host names in the telephone number field is a bad idea because:
Classic POTS mailers were written on the assumption that the telephone number field contains one of the following and nothing else:
o A valid dialable telephone number o The string "-Unpublished-" (without the quotes)
In general there is no way to tell what will happen if anything else is presented to a classic POTS mailer with a POTS modem. The modem may attempt to dial it according to the letters on a standard telephone, or it may attempt to dial the letters a-d as DTMF codes in the fourth row. Or it may do something else.
Anything but a valid dialable telephone number or "-Unpublisehd-" is bad juju and I am very glad that we can finally get rid of all the bogus telephone numbers in the nodelist.
