Unfortuntely Hawking may as well be. He is in the sad position of being a great mind that is unable to do anything useful with it any more, other than just be there. His output channel has to little bandwidth.. :-(

I think Einstein was overrated anyway. His theory of relativity is not all that hard to understand. Maxwell was almost there. In hindsight the Maxwell equations almost say it. And Lorentz with his Lorentz contractions was even closer. How much more do you need to say "Thou shall't not go faster than light"?
People saying that the world would have been very different without Einstein don't understand how science works. If it had not been Einstein that put the final piece of the puzzle in place, it would have been someone else. Not more than five years later.

Einstein was not the only one who could not except that nature is basically unpredictable. Even my fellow student of year 1963, Gerard t'Hooft claims the universe is deterministic. He got the Nobel prize (1999) for his work in quantum mechanics but he agrees with Einstein. He added that in the end it is a moot point because one can not calculate faster than the universe itself.
