Then you were way ahead of us in The Netherlands, Fido was still 100% ASCII only back then. Despite the fact that we do use some non-ASII characters in out writings. There are of course the accents and tremas, but there is also the concatenated 'ij' and the Dutch Florin sign 'ƒ'. We had to revert to tricks like writing 'e1n' instead of 'één' to make the distintion in pronunciation between 'een' and 'één'.

It wasn't until 1997 or so that non ASCII characters were "tolerated" by some moderators. There was no discussion about the character set to use. It was the original IBM set which we now know as CP437..
