When I was a boy, my cousins from the city of The Hague used to come stay at our house in the province for the summer holidays.
At one time me and my cousins wanted our own radio station. This was at the time of the "North sea 'pirate' radio stations".
So we considered declaring my parents house an independent country. That way we would not be bound by Dutch law and we could have our own radio station. And then we discussed it a bit more. Not only could we have our own radio station, we could have our own school. To which we could decide not to go or write our own diplomas. The more we discussed it, the more advantages we dreamed up about being an independent state.
But the dream didn't last long. We soon realised that we could not generate our own electricity for the radio station. We maybe could have our own generator, but we'd have to buy the fuel to run it from "abroad". No oil in our back yard. We could of course print our own money. But would it be accepted by the gas staion on the other side of the village? Hmmm, probably not.
It was an interesting thought experiment about the pros and cons of independant souvreignty...
