Hello Ward,

On Sunday September 18 2016 14:40, you wrote to me:

Mv>> Maybe. Or maybe it is not what you want to hear.

WD> Or maybe it is just what you want to hear.

It is not what I want to hear, but the world seldom listens to what I want.

WD> Can you imagine again checkpoints on the Irish/Ulster border?

Yes.

There was a checkpoint when I crossed that border om my BMW R25 in 1965. It didn't amount to much back then. I didn't have to show my passport, I wasn't even asked to take off my helmet. I had to stop, but after a quick glance I was waved on.

That checkpoint can be back in 2020. And my guess is that when that happens, it will look a lot more impressive than the shelter the size of a bus stop with two border guards back then in 1965.

WD>  It would be nothing short of disconnecting Ireland from Europe.

Unless Northern Ireland separates from the UK and joins the EU as an independant, after Brexit the Irish/Ulster border will be the outer border of the EU. Neither the EU nor the UK will have any other choice than to (re)install border control. If they don't, it will be an open door for anyone wanting to go from the EU to the UK and visa versa. Which is what the UK wants to control...

The Irish won't like it. But I am afraid they are not in a position to do much about it.

WD> I'm quite certain there will not be any visa-reauirement, just an
WD> identity-card requirement ... which is already in place now.

I would not bet on it...

WD> By voting "leave" in the referendum they opened the can of worms which
WD> they should've left closed.

Agreed. That can of worms should have been left closed. Too bad they opened it anyway and now the worms crawling all over the place have to be dealt with. :(

Cheers, Michiel
