I'd say it is already way past the point of no return. Turkey will not join the EU, but for political reasons no one in charge dares say it out loud yet.

The writing was already on the wall five years ago. It was when a law was in the making that allows man to use physical violance againt their wife. Outside pressure was needed to convince them that such a law would be a barrier in joining the EU. Back then, I already said that the very fact that outside pressure was needed to stop that law, in itself already was a disqualification. If they can't figure out for themselves that legally beating your wife is not compatible with EU values, then they don't belong in the EU. Period.
