Another potential area of conflict is Gibraltar. It has been a thorn in the eye of the Spanish. The EU was the bandaid for these kind of historical conflicts. Parties have accepted the status quo because they are all in the EU.
But now the bandaid is taken away and the open wound is exposed again. Now that it will no longer be part of the EU, Spain wants Gibraltar back. They have already gotten the EU to declare that any deal with the UK, will not automatically apply to Gibraltar. Giving Spain a de facto veto on deals about Gibraltar. The EU does not want an outside border between Gibraltar and Spain.
Hawks in the UK have already cried war "to protect the people of Gibraltar". But the reality is that the EU will protect the interest of its members. And Spain is a member of the EU.
The divorce between the EU an the UK will not be a nice "let us part as friends" thing.
