The hearts and minds of the British - not the UKians - always were on the west side of the Atlantic Ridge - closer to the US than to Europe. It might very well be to the advantage of the EU if this was said out loud and formalised. Then at least everyone knows who stands where.
Will it be good for the UK? I can't say. If the UK formalises the close relationship with the US, they may run into the same problems as they have now with the EU. The US may not be all that willing to give them "better deal" after "beter deal". Especially not with Donald "America First" Trump in the driver's seat...
