Hello Robert,

On Friday May 12 2017 11:01, you wrote to me:

And old sculptures do not get me exited eother.

Not that I recall...

Her head is missing! ;-)

I am certainly not going to stand in a que for an hour and pay to see that in real life.

You may call me a barbarian, but I do not care for such things. And for the record: I am allergic to classic music and poetry.

Regarding the Monal Lisa and other "famous" pictures, my POV is a bit comparable to that of the value of gold.

Of these "famous" pictures copies - AKA forgeries - have been made that not even the so called experts can tell from the original without invoking modern science like Röntgen diffractometry and gas chromographucs. Pictures have been sold for fortunes, until the experts decided they were forgeries. A striking example is "Supper at Emmaus" by Han Van Meegeren. Believed to be a Vermeer and sold to Hermann Göring as such. Van Meegeren was arrested after the war as a collaborator and accused of selling Dutch cultural property to the Nazis.

In defence he claimed that what he had sold were forgeries and he proved it by doing it again under the eyes of experts.

"Famous paintings" are famous and hence valuable because people believe them to be valuable. Copies AKA forgeries are worthless, despite te fact that only a handfull of experts can tell them apart. Or claim they can.

BTW, I have a "real" van Megeren. Signed with his own name. It is not valuable. The only reason it has value to me is because it is a portrait of my grandfater Johan (Jan) Bernard Ubink.

Cheers, Michiel
