Hello Robert,

On Sunday June 18 2017 17:54, you wrote to me:

MV>> LBJ a positive change?

RB> I wrote "positive or at least neutral".

What is the difference between "just as bad" (my words) and "neutral" (your words)?

RB> And "Saint Kennedy" was, to me (and I lived through his administration

Kennedy was no Saint. We know that. But then Saints do not get to be president of the USA.

RB> It was HE, and nobody else, who started the American incursion in
RB> Vietnam - and he, and nobody else, who supported and aided the "bay of
RB> pigs" invasion of Cuba.

Yes, Kennedy brought us on the verge of nuclear war. But the details of that incident didn't come out until decades later. And yes, it was Kennedy that initiated the Vietnam war. But it was Johnson that didn't end it and intensified it instead by deploying napalm an agent orange, causing lots and lots of civilian casualties.

Johnson was the first US president that had the questionable honour of being the subject of demonstrations against him here in The Netherlands. As I mentioned before, to many of my generation Johnson marked the end of the US being the unconditional good guys.

RB> Don't believe for a minute that Kennedy was a saint. He was only lucky
RB> to be killed before the bad things about him came to light. A rich boy
RB> with a crooked father who effectively bought him the presidency.

When was the last time a poor boy with an honest father became POTUS?

RB> I was pleased when "Cape Kennedy" reverted to "Cape Canaveral".

Hmmm... Kennedy was the POTUS to initiate the Apollo project that put man on the moon. That was almost half a century ago and no other nation has repeated that yet. He deserves some credit for that.

I don't support rewriting history.

RB> The half dollars were bad enough. At least FDR deswerved to be put on
RB> the dime.

If you say so...

Cheers, Michiel
