WD> The eclipse there is at 98%. If it can be managed we will drive to WD> Cody WY and then head south early in the day to catch 100%, however if WD> the roads really are that crazy jam-packed as predicted I'll just sit WD> in my chair and enjoy the spectacle which, where we are, is supposed WD> to last for 2min23sec.
Setteling for 98% is a mistake. The difference in experience between 98% and 100% is much greater then the numbers suggest. The subjective difference is 1000%. If you go through all the trouble of traveling to another continent to see a solar eclipse, DO NOT STOP AT 98%!
With "just" 98% you will not see the stars, you will not see the corona, you will not see any protuberans. It will not be totally dark. Take the advice of someone who has seen it with his own eyes (protected): Go for the full Monty! You may not get another chance.
WD> You're welcome to join us there and camp with us ... that is real WD> rural camping. There are decent sanitary facilities, there is fresh WD> drinking water, there is trout fishing and it's prime grizzly habitat. WD> [and I will have portable wifi, so not that primitive either]
