I am very glad I saw the 1999 eclipse in Normandie. I did not make any reservations. I just hooked up the caravan 10 days ahead, drifted along the coast till Dieppe and then went east following the predicted track until I found a camping that was not fully booked for the 11th. Didn't take all that long. No traffic jams, no panic. It was crowded on the camping for two days, but nothing like the hysteria you foresee.
There was even room for my parent's camper who came along on their way to Ireland..
