The human memory is notoriously unreliable. But you are right, it was not totally dark. It was much darker than a few minutes before or a few minutes after totality, but it was not so dark that I could not see the people standing next to me. In fact I remember handing over my "unfilterded" binoculars to my Belgian neighboury, so that he couls also see the corona and the protuberans, That would not have been possible in total darkness.
