That might be a reason to run one's own services, but for others to use that service would just be changing one possible SPOF for another.

Indeed. Anyway, I have learned my lesson. After having made use of a variety of free services, some run by a compamny, some run by an individual sysop, I have switched to a paid service. It only costs a few Euro a year and a paid service can not shut down at whim overnight.
