A company providing a paid service can not discontinue the service at whim overnight. That would be a breach of contract. Of course they can go bankrupt, but that does not happen all that often. A free service provided by an individual sysop can evaporate just like that. I have seen it happen with fidosoft.de.

It depends on how reliable the service must be. If one needs the service for one's bussines, it would certainly be wise to have redundancy. If it is just for Fidonet... it is not the end of the world if a node is occasionally down for a couple of hours. I have an account with eurodns.com for over a decade now and they have never been down, Not that I have noticed anyway.
