I think that is a bit of an overkill for a hobby network. It is not the end of Fidonet if a node is occasionally down for a short period.
With a reliable DNS provider the DNS is not the weakest link. I have made use of a paid DNS service (eurodns.com) for well over a decade and AFAIK, my system has never been unreachable because of a DNS failure. Most of the downtime was due to power interuptions, operator error and maintenance.
