The stationary satellites are at 37000 km above earth. The single hop return time is under 500 mS. That is large for a ping and possible too large for gamers, but for just surfing the web it is quit doable. I was linked up once that way at a hamfest and have experienced it myself.

No not that much. The many seconds latency from TV reporters in Outback is caused by much more than a single satellite hop. Probably multiple hops and reconversion of digital images.
