Every system and every person is different, but for me personally?
1) Funny noises coming fron an HDD are a good start, when you hear clicks then trouble is on its way. 2) There are some people which pride themselves of having a system which has been 'up' for years. Well, I would say: boot it once a week. When booting-up the OS performs checks and when it says "Consistency problem found. Check hard disc Y/N?' ... trouble may be brewing. The BIOS-screens may also contain useful information as well as the "disk management" under "computer management" under "administrative tools" of Windows may be of help. 3) Bad sectors? After initial startup of the disc, there shouldn't be any new ones. If the number of bad sectors increases you have a technical issue. Deal with the cold before your system gets a heart-attack. 4) Stay away from 2nd hand discs on eBay. They mean trouble before you even connect them
