I don't think it works like that. The copyright is valid for 75 years or so.
So if a new version of the book, with a new preface, new illustrations, new afterword, etc is put on the market, then that whole new production is copyrighted again ... as a whole, but the rights on the original text which is a part of that new production are gone.
