At the moment I'm having too much fun asking the Dutch, the Germans and the Americans how their team is doing in Russia ... "Schadenfreude 100%" ... :-)
Canadians are off the hook ... no jokes about their footballteam .... Their "what" ? ... OK, couldn't control myself.
Other than that it's a sport being played professionally by guys who make as much in 1 week as I did in 20years ... compare that with what they only need to do for it ... kick a ball ... heck, even Nick Andre knows how to do that, but he's Canadian, so he's OK.
Some 10+ years ago a first division pro-team playing champions' league showed up in our gymnast training hall due to bad weather and no last minute gym was available. They did the warm-up with our 12-14yr old girls ... 20 minutes later they had to sit down, take a breather, drink some water. The girls had fun asking one of those football stars "Would you like 'my' autograph now?"
There are far more urgent matters in the world than football ... then when you see 20.000 Brazilians for each of their games in Russia, or 6000 Colombians, 12.000 Argentinans ... you wonder about the standard of living and if that money wouldn't be spend wiser elsewhere ...
Now I need to confess I have a season ticket for my local team. I enjoy sitting on the grandstands, witnessing the raw enthusiasm or desilusion among the people near me. Drink some beers. In the past season we missed the promotion by a hair-width and my friend, an adult guy in his 50-ies, was sobbing like a kid. I'm just lucky there's no beam above my head where pidgeons can sit on, fornicate and shit on my head ... two rows in front of me it is often a pidgeon-shit barage.
